I was born and raised in Louisville Kentucky. At the ripe age of 19....a buddy and I headed to the hills of Tennessee with $100.00 and our guitars slung over our backs... (by the way....it's still slung over my back). At that time I had no idea that I would end up here for the next 22 years...but the mountains and the people put something in my heart that I couldn't seem to live without. So here I stayed.  Not only did I stay.......  I ended up owing the bank lots of money.....which I think gives me the official privilege of calling it Home.

I began my Sculpting career working with a local Wood Carver. One week he didn't have enough money to pay me....  so he traded me a set of carving tools. Thus began my career. I started carving Wood Spirits and selling them in Gatlinburg. After about 8 years of carving, I started looking for other ways to express my art. After checking out all the mediums to work with....Clay sparked my interest the most. This is the medium I still work in primarily today.  I start by designing my Wood Spirits in the clay,  blending the beard and features into my driftwood. I then make a mold from the original (which by the way...destroys it)  then I cast the finished piece in a resin.  All of my work is designed to be limited in production time or Limited Editions, with a specific number of pieces cast  ......making them a collectable.    I can't begin to tell you all how much I appreciate my loyal customers......  they have allowed me to continue my art.  I have been flattered and humbled over the years with a number of folks who have entire collections of my work.

So that's about it. I'm still here in the Tennessee mountains....thinking about what to make next. I am planning on doing some Cottonwood bark carving this Winter and Spring, and will be offering these pieces on my web site. I haven't pursued any carving in over 8 years ....so it should be interesting. butternut.jpg (9165 bytes)
Ok.... enough about you.
What is a Woodspirit ?

The origination of the Wood Spirit concept is a little hard to pinpoint. Almost every culture at one time or another has had the belief that trees and bark and wood had a living spirit. The Indians believed that all things had a living spirit and treated those spirits with due respect. I try to envision the character in a piece of driftwood and bring out the personality in each piece I work with. Sometimes the wood brings out the personality and sometimes the personality is fitted to the wood. I will be adding sites to my Favorite Links page for you to visit and get a better understanding of the whole Wood Spirit concept. I will also be adding to my pages often so be sure and book mark my page and visit often.
